Downtime Cost Calculator

Put a value on every hour your crushing circuit stands. Enter your site's figures and the results update as you type.

Example values are loaded. Replace them with your own.

Plant
t/h

Tonnes per hour at your normal running rate.

R/t

Selling price less variable cost. Leave out fixed costs.

Time
h/yr
%

Share of scheduled hours the crusher is ready to run.

%
Failures
stops
R

Parts, labour and equipment hire for an average stop.

Advanced: stockpile buffering
%

Lower this if a stockpile or surge bin keeps downstream circuits running during a stop.

    How this is calculated
    • Cost of one hour stopped = throughput × margin per tonne.
    • Hours lost = scheduled hours × (1 − availability) × share of stoppage that halts the plant.
    • Total annual cost = hours lost × cost of one hour + unplanned stops × repair cost per stop.
    • Value of reaching the target = extra available hours × cost of one hour. Repair costs are not included in this figure.

Use contribution margin (price less variable cost) for the margin per tonne. Fixed costs carry on whether the plant runs or not, so they do not add to the cost of a stop. This is a planning estimate, not a forecast.
